It's interesting to imagine how King Charles would "accept" this gift from the little Soldier of Orange. He would, of course, be as diplomatic as possible, gracious naturally, and invoking shared Anglo-American partnerships.
But privately? If he knew this sword was purloined from the library, coerced against the wishes of the Library itself and against much historical protocol (how often have such items been de-accessioned from prior presidential libraries and in such a manner?), what would his response be? Might King Charles would view such a coerced gift as ethically and ceremonially untenable?
