The former director of the Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library in Abilene, Kansas, said on Thursday that he was told to “resign or be fired” from his post after refusing to give the Trump administration a historic sword.

Todd Arrington’s resignation came shortly after Arrington refused to relinquish one of President Eisenhower’s swords from the museum’s collection. President Trump’s administration wanted to give one of the artifacts as a gift to King Charles III on Trump’s most recent state visit to the United Kingdom.

Arrington said his direct superior informed him on Monday evening that he would be asked to resign. The supervisor, who Arrington declined to name, said he was passing down orders from unknown higher-ups.

If Lord Trump had served, he could have had his own sword to give away. Is giving away someone else's sword "stolen valor"?

I keep thinking that one day, he’s gonna show up dressed like Muammar Gaddafi- complete with gold braid, epaulettes and a chest full of medals, including the Medal of Honor, Silver Star, Bronze Star and that Purple Heart he got for bone spurs.

Is it appropriate to wear a medal for the Nobel Peace Prize on a military uniform?

That too. The more flashy stuff, the better.

iirc Kaddaffi (seems the media could never agree how to spell his name) was a Colonel in the Libyan army, at the time of the coup.

Churchill liked to wear uniforms, when he was PM, during the war. But then, he was a British Army vet, tho, iirc, his choice tended to be RAF uniforms.

From the Google net sifter:

Winston Churchill wore his Royal Air Force uniform as an Honorary Air Commodore of the 615 (County of Surrey) Fighter Squadron. He first appeared in the uniform in 1939 and wore it on official visits to RAF facilities during World War II to show his support for the air force and the war effort. He also held the honorary rank of Air Commodore and was awarded honorary pilot's wings in 1943.

Hey! There's a thought. His nibs could appoint himself an "honorary" 10 star General, because, after all, he's twice as important as any other General that has ever been, right?

I'm always amused that Americans think that their "historical" stuff means a damn thing to civilizations who were here waaaaaaaaaaay before the first Starbucks was ever built.

And then one skips over the European Genociders and looks around in Thailand or whereever in Asia where artificats and ruins and temples are around waaaaaay before some boring ass castle was ever built.

Sorry people, our swords are fine for us -- but let's still to our knitting. Lukewarm food, being in a hurry, and angry faced all around.

But Shinyland is "exceptional". That means everyone is supposed to bow down to our totems.

It's interesting to imagine how King Charles would "accept" this gift from the little Soldier of Orange. He would, of course, be as diplomatic as possible, gracious naturally, and invoking shared Anglo-American partnerships.

But privately? If he knew this sword was purloined from the library, coerced against the wishes of the Library itself and against much historical protocol (how often have such items been de-accessioned from prior presidential libraries and in such a manner?), what would his response be? Might King Charles would view such a coerced gift as ethically and ceremonially untenable?

lessee....who else was notorious for looting artifacts from museums? Yes, I know there were a lot of cases. But one in particular...

from the Google net sifter

Yes, the 1964 film "The Train" is loosely based on the true story of a real-life incident documented in Rose Valland's book, Le front de l'art. In August 1944, the French Resistance, with Valland's help, successfully prevented a German train from carrying looted French art treasures to Germany by creating endless delays and red tape. The film dramatizes these events, expanding on the resistance's efforts to hold up the train in a railyard outside Paris.

The True Story

The Looted Art: During World War II, the Nazis systematically looted museums and private collections throughout France.

Rose Valland's Role: Art historian Rose Valland worked at the Jeu de Paume museum, which became a central storage point for these stolen artworks. She secretly documented the looted works and provided crucial information to the French Resistance.

The Train's Attempt: As the Allies approached Paris in late August 1944, the Nazis attempted to ship a vast collection of art to Germany.

The cases of Nazi art theft are also leveraged for some plot lines in "Hogan's Heroes"

But Lord Trump is "exceptional", so rules of conduct do not apply.

Yes, a lot of countries have been trying, for decades, to get back stuff looted by the British and French. Technically, the "Luxor obelisk" was a gift to France, so his nibs probably thinks that is precedent.
