It seems inevitable that if Democrats gain control of the house, senate, and white house as of 2028, they are finally going to institute some form of single-payer health care, Medicare for all, or some sort of last resort option available to anyone. That doesn't meant private health insurance will be eliminated, that doesn't seem possible or desirable. Even European nations which have universal health care also typically have private options for those who can afford and want them.

The larger issue which Progressives don't seem to grasp is that rationing of health care dollars and health care services is going to occur regardless.

Sure there may be a base level of universal health care to cover essential services.

The question is, what is considered "essential"? That's where the rationing will occur among other points of the system.

Or, the rationing could occur by much longer wait times for services deemed "non essential" or "elective."

Sure, you can have that knee replacement or hip replacement surgery "for free..."

...if you live long enough to make it to your appointment which might be 18 months, 3 years, or whatever in the future.

Meanwhile, just hobble around as best you can.

Are you obese? You want weight loss drugs? Sorry, you need to address your problems through behavioral health techniques, they are much cheaper. The national health care system will happily pay for a P.A. to monitor your diet and exercise regimen to make sure you are living in a more healthy way. Of course there will be penalties if you miss your weekly weigh in appointment.

And, no birthday cake for you!
