https://www.axios.com/2025/12/08/senate-republican...

The plan from Finance Committee chair Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) and health committee chair Bill Cassidy (R-La.) does not extend the tax credits past their expiration at year's end, instead providing funds to enrollees in health savings accounts, according to a summary obtained by Axios.

It's not the only GOP plan that's been floated in recent days as Republicans struggle to unite around health care policies.
What's inside: Certain ACA enrollees earning less than 700% of the federal poverty level would receive $1,000 in an HSA if they're 18 to 49 years old, and $1,500 if they're 50 to 64, according to the outline distributed to Senate offices over the weekend.

$1500 in an HSA in place of subsidies? They do know that the deductible on a Bronze plan is $7,500/person? Crapo-care indeed.

It seems inevitable that if Democrats gain control of the house, senate, and white house as of 2028, they are finally going to institute some form of single-payer health care, Medicare for all, or some sort of last resort option available to anyone. That doesn't meant private health insurance will be eliminated, that doesn't seem possible or desirable. Even European nations which have universal health care also typically have private options for those who can afford and want them.

The larger issue which Progressives don't seem to grasp is that rationing of health care dollars and health care services is going to occur regardless.

Sure there may be a base level of universal health care to cover essential services.

The question is, what is considered "essential"? That's where the rationing will occur among other points of the system.

Or, the rationing could occur by much longer wait times for services deemed "non essential" or "elective."

Sure, you can have that knee replacement or hip replacement surgery "for free..."

...if you live long enough to make it to your appointment which might be 18 months, 3 years, or whatever in the future.

Meanwhile, just hobble around as best you can.

Are you obese? You want weight loss drugs? Sorry, you need to address your problems through behavioral health techniques, they are much cheaper. The national health care system will happily pay for a P.A. to monitor your diet and exercise regimen to make sure you are living in a more healthy way. Of course there will be penalties if you miss your weekly weigh in appointment.

And, no birthday cake for you!

If a deal to extend the enhanced subsidies isn’t reached, many Americans will be forced to swallow massive monthly premium increases. A family of four making $130,000, for example, could see annual premium costs rise from $11,050 with enhancements to $23,909 without, according to calculations from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.

Cause:
Americans see their medical costs skyrocketing next year by the most in more than a decade, according to data published Monday by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

Effect:
... “perceptions about households’ current financial situations compared to a year ago deteriorated notably.”

Marco, if you're going to have a conversation about health care, assume everyone here is as intelligent as yourself. I've been saying for years that the health care systems break down into three tiers usually, with different levels of treatment, those who can afford it get some treatment outside of it, and no one worries about Jeff Bezos or Elon Musk. Take it from me that everyone here knows this, it is no grand revelation, and when we talk health care here, it should be non-partisan.

You were making a point that Mississippi has a better GDP per capita than most of Europe in another thread, yes, but they have better standards of living and are better on the happiness scales and one of the reasons is their health care, and robust social safety nets. And we can't get there because people say, "Commie! Pinko! Welfare Queen!" and if that doesn't derail the conversation, lies do the rest.

What's the definition of "better standard of living"?

How do you quantify that if not by per capita GDP?

You can't just throw out a subjective arbitrary phrase without defining what it means.

I have read his posts.

I think he does assume everyone here is as intelligent as himself.

LOL!
You'd have to drive a railroad spike into my brain for me to be as intelligent as old marco!

Why in blazes are you all replying to this non-serious person? That's the real question.
