Back in the day when Abraham came wandering into the area, they were called Amorites, Jebusites, Hivites, Canaanites... all sorts of “ites”, (though no
Stalagtites)
Yep - and the Jews were originally Canaanites. The Jewish people emerged from a group of Canaanites that developed their own religious beliefs, language, and ethnocultural traditions that became separate and discrete from the broader Canaanite culture.
The Jews didn't wander into the area - they came from there. The Abraham story in the bible is a literary construct, not an historical account of the origins of the Jews. It's a made-up origin myth that was formed out of oral traditions and fashioned into the Genesis story during the Babylonian Exile. The main purpose of narrative was to try to separate the identity of the Jewish people from the local Canaanite culture and polytheistic practices, and reinforce the separate (and to the Jews of the time more religiously purified) observances of the Jewish people from the local ones.
But the Jews are entirely indigenous to the area. Despite the literary biblical myth of Abraham crossing into the land as an outsider, the Jews emerged from the Canaanites.
