I must be misreading this. Is that "the people we are called (upon) to treat, like Jesus called upon us to do" or "the people we are called (upon) to treat, as we treat (revere) Jesus?

The first.

“call/called” has a specific meaning within the Christian tradition that is slightly different from secular usage.

Consider the following sentences:

Jesus calls us.
We are called.
We are called to serve.

There’s more a sense of immediacy and personal engagement than is conveyed by by “called upon”.
