I never used the packets. I used to use (and still have) a hot-air popper, and it worked well enough. More recently I've been using a 16 cup bowl in the microwave: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00N4Z3IZW/. Neither does a perfect job, but at least in the microwave there aren't ready-to-pop kernels tossed into the bowl like tiny bombs, where they explode and send popcorn all over the place.
