The week's question
In March 2025, in the thread "Re: OT, out", Umm asked the members: "Do you think it is because America is made up of magical soil that makes businesses based in America magically profitable?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

More importantly, it shows scumbags quickly through the Doors of Life.

Not really. iirc, the squad was reloading to give Eddie Slovik a second volley, when he finally expired.

The firing squad consisted of 12 soldiers selected from the 109th Regiment. The weapons used were standard-issue M1 Garand rifles, 11 of them loaded with just one round and one rifle loaded with a blank round.[8] On the command of "Fire", Slovik was hit by eleven bullets, at least four of them being fatal. The wounds ranged from high in the neck region out to the left shoulder, over the left chest, and under the heart. One bullet was in the left upper arm. An Army physician quickly determined Slovik had not been immediately killed. As the firing squad's rifles were being reloaded to fire another volley, Slovik died. He was 24 years old. The entire execution took 15 minutes.

Frank Gusenberg

When police arrived at the scene, Gusenberg was the only victim still alive despite having been shot fourteen times (reports erroneously list twenty-two times).[1][2] Among the police was Sergeant Clarence Sweeney who had grown up in the same neighborhood as the Gusenberg brothers and immediately recognized Frank.[2] Sweeney asked Gusenberg, "Who shot you?" Gusenberg, observing the gangland principle of "omertà" (absolute silence) replied, "Nobody shot me."[3][4]

Gusenberg was then taken to Alexian Brothers Hospital where he was once again asked by Sweeney who shot him. He again refused to answer. Gusenberg's last words reportedly were, "I ain't no copper."[1] Gusenberg died of his wounds three hours after being shot.
