He could be a cynical opportunist, or, he could be a true convert. Remember the 80s, when being a "born again Christian fundamentalist" was so fashionable? There is nothing worse than the zealotry of a convert. As he tolerates his wife being a Hindu, I lean toward "cynical opportunist"
