Negotiations were making progress in February too. The Omani mediator said Iran was offering more than it offered in the JCPOA. Another meeting was scheduled for a few days later, but Trump attacked in the interim.
Meanwhile, that second assault ship full of Marines draws closer to the Persian Gulf. The first assault ship arrived March 27. The second, USS Boxer, stopped at Hawaii on March 31. At her cruising speed of 18kts, she could make the trip from Hawaii to the Persian Gulf in 21-23 days, according to the net sifter, ie about two weeks from now.
