Item: The Admiral is at least 50% likely to be on the right side politically anyway and they all know it. That's why he agreed to this story.

Item: He either gets a "full, free, and absolute pardon" from any war crimes ...or maybe he gets court martialed and good luck having Admirals convict an Admiral for making a "military decision while under fire" or they will simply stack the panel with friendly officers. They won't convict and everybody goes home.

Everybody did their jobs and the system worked
