rather than average Americans exercising their constitutional rights

There is no constitutional right to ignore federal law. The unfortunate protesters broke at least two federal laws each before deadly force was employed. I am not saying the the shootings were justified, the investigations have not been completed. But it is not the case these two individuals were only chanting and waving signs as lawful protesters do.
