Historical context: USN battleships built around the time of WWI, used a steam turbine/electric drive system. It offered some advantages in applying astern power. It also offered additional protection: the turbine/generator sets were located alone the centerline of the hull, while the boiler rooms were along the periphery, so they could act as supplemental torpedo bulkheads. The crewmen in a boiler room may die in a torpedo hit, but the powerplant would be protected.
