The week's question
In March 2025, in the thread "Re: OT, out", Umm asked the members: "Do you think it is because America is made up of magical soil that makes businesses based in America magically profitable?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

"Some Chinese open models are now 80 percent to 90 percent as powerful as those from OpenAI and Anthropic, while costing as little as 20 percent of the price..."

For many/most problems, they are 100% as powerful. With solar panels, the amortised cost is close to zero (if you / your company has a suitable PC already).

Importantly, you have control over which model runs, how much effort it makes.

Consider, one of the most irritating things about cloud AI is that they keep changing the model & behaviour & quality behind the scenes. Availability is also unpredictable.

It is very hard to run a business in a predictable way with that sort of thing happening.
