I was watching B5 when it was running, waiting every week for a new episode, and being annoyed at waiting months between seasons.
You're right. Martin could probably do a "20 years later" and tie things up. That skips the need to account for all actions, and just say "these folks are dead, here's the situation now".
As an aside, the blowing up of the station in B5 was stupid. You're creating a hazard to navigation with all that space debris. Either de-orbit the thing to the planet (forget the name), or dismantle it. That was disappointing.
But the ending of GOT was a disaster. Having Kalesi go all-despot on us was inconsistent when not long prior she wept at her dragons killing farmers' livestock (and at least one child, as I recall). That was jolting, and not in a good way (like when Sean Bean was executed in season 1...that was jolting, and sad, and consistent).
