The week's question
In March 2025, in the thread "Re: OT, out", Umm asked the members: "Do you think it is because America is made up of magical soil that makes businesses based in America magically profitable?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

The Biden admin. appears to be set to allow a dozen states to ban the sale of new gasoline powered cars in 2035. Trump will of course reverse the decision, but the Loper Bright decision last summer may throw a monkey wrench into Trump's ability to deny states their right to create regulations.

NYT story with out a paywall
archive.today - California ban gas cars electric biden trump
The Biden administration is expected in the coming days to grant California and 11 other states permission to ban the sale of new gasoline-powered cars by 2035, one of the most ambitious climate policies in the United States and beyond, according to three people briefed on the matter, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss it publicly.

President-elect Donald J. Trump is expected to revoke permission soon after taking office, part of his pledge to scrap Biden-era climate policies. “California has imposed the most ridiculous car regulations anywhere in the world, with mandates to move to all electric cars,” Mr. Trump has said. “I will terminate that.”

The state is expected to fight any revocation, setting up a consequential legal battle with the new administration.

And here's where the case reversing the Chevron Doctrine comes into play.
governing.com - Supreme court ruling could help blue states resist trump policies
A major U.S. Supreme Court decision this summer was hailed as a conservative court’s broadside against a Democratic administration, giving red states more backing to delay or overturn policies they don’t like, such as transgender protections and clean-energy goals.

But the ruling in the Loper Bright case, which granted courts more power to scrutinize federal rules, can go both ways. Experts say it will likely give blue states more leeway to attack any forthcoming policy changes from President-elect Donald Trump — ranging from immigration and the environment to Medicaid and civil rights.

Even if the case eventually reaches the SCOTUS, eventually can be several election cycles down the road.
