That's way too simplistic. One of the issues is that over the time since the GFC,much larger and more expensive vehicles such as SUVs,trucks (even for people who don't really need them), and crossovers have become much more popular relative to more economical sedans.

So, people are purchasing vehicles that they don't really need and cost much more out the door than they can afford to spend in the first place.
