I wonder how big a deal 'commie' is for the under 40 group? I know it still has resonance for the over 50 folks, but I'm not sure it has the same effect on younger voters.
I suspect it wouldn't. Those who came of age after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the USSR might not have quite as many negative associations with communism or "commie," though they certainly won't have been presented in a positive light in the history books.
Not sure that matters all that much quite yet. In the last midterms, about 3/4 of voters were over 40. The older the cohort, the higher the turnout rate. ~70% of seniors voted in the last midterms, while 30% of those between 18-30 voted.
The bulk of the electorate will be old enough to remember the Soviet Union.
