Dope, you see prominent countries skating on ponying up for defense, but... for at least 50 years after WW2 we didn't want them strong on defense, especially Germany. We needed allies, and we wanted them to have some defense, but not as good as ours. Our defense industries helped shape that, and it was easy not to want German engineering directed at defense, or that they have standing armies. So... we WANTED it that way, but that began to change. They've been competing with good weaponry, planes, etc., but we still need allies. We won't always be top dog, ya know. For some reason y'all like to treat our allies badly and roughly. When has that ever worked?
