They are a walking, talking example of the Sunk Cost Fallacy. Emphasis on "Sunk", and emphasis on "Fallacy".
The sunk cost fallacy is the irrational tendency to continue an endeavor or choice simply because you have already invested time, money, or effort into it, even when walking away is the logical and beneficial move.
Said another way by the brilliant Carl Sagan in his book Demon-Haunted World:
"One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we’ve been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We’re no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It’s simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we’ve been taken. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back."
On the positive side, our RW friends' dipshittery is limited to their waking hours.
