Or the US sinks into the perpetual turmoil of the typical banana republic, swinging from corrupt democratic regimes, to military coups, and back again.
Likely. The strongman who takes over, perhaps as a result of an abortive civil war. When you think about it, the only reason our nation functioned for so long was because people agreed that it should. The Constitution is just a piece of parchment. The peaceful change of power every four years was simply "how it was done". Until the Felon. He (and many of his followers) insist he didn't lose in 2020, and that he should run again in 2028.
The norms only work when everyone expects and observes them. When that breaks down, anarchy ensues. And with anarchy comes warlords and strongmen. Once a strongman takes control, given our state of technology, we'll never be able to recovery. We have 1984 technology today, and it can be used to control the population (see several examples, including China and DPRK).
Freedom ends. Which is ironic, as many of the troublemakers prattle on about freedom as if they have already lost it. They are, in fact, on the path the losing it if they don't pull back and restore the norms.
