I put a new (Whirlpool) dishwasher in this house when we moved in 6 years ago. We have yet to clean the filter.

That's what led to Sis having to replace her dishwasher. They didn't even know what the filter was or that they had to do anything with it.

There's no real sign that there's a need to clean it, unless you don't scrape your plate at all, but it is very easy to do, so why not?
