I bought a Bosch 800 series with crystal dry.
It’s actually amazing. Dishes, etc., are super clean and no water left on anything.
Had it for 6 months. Still in awe. My husband mostly does the dishes, now, because it’s so cool.

I wrote and deleted a pretty long love letter my Bosch dishwasher in response the original message. I won't reproduce it here, but since you mentioned them I wanted to second your sentiment. Mine doesn't have the newer features, because it's almost 20 years old. But it keeps working quietly, reliably, and excellently.

When buying a new dishwasher, like the Bosch, make sure your dishes actually fit. We learned the need to bring ours into the showroom to try them, physically. Quiet and clean doesn't do much good for your dirty dishes if you can't fit them into the machine efficiently.

loving the Whirlpool Gold that accommodated our dishes

Yes, this is very important. But also note that many modern dishwashers have upper racks that can be raised or lowered as necessary.

We learned the need to bring ours into the showroom to try them, physically.

That's a good idea! But if you have really oversized dinnerware, then they won't fit in any dishwasher because they're all pretty much the same (they have to fit in roughly a 24x24x28 space).

All the Bosch dishwashers have the filter located in the bottom. The sales woman in the Best Buy told me it needs to be cleaned out at least once a week. That's a non-starter for me since my knee hurts (I'm age 71).

Is there any good DW with a readily accessible filter?

My 1987 DW doesn't have a filter at all. Apparently it grinds up any large particles -- though my dogs make sure there aren't any before I load the dishes.

We have had a Bosch unit for 5 years and clean the filter every 3 months. We do scrape or rinse the solids off of our dishes. There is very little in the filter, and our dishwasher never has an odor. We survived 49 years of marriage without a dishwasher, but we can't imagine going back to hand washing without rending of clothes, tears and gnashing of teeth.

The dishwashers I have used, (and given all the 30 day + rentals we do as part of our gypsy lifestyle, that's not a small number), tend to have their filter at the bottom as well. That said, one does not have to kneel down to get to them. Simply reach over and unscrew the filter, which is below the lower rack. Clean and replace. Have them show you where it is in the show room and try it out. I use an old toothbrush to clean mine after each load of dishes. DH doesn't scrape his plate well, but hey, he puts it in the dishwasher so happiness! We currently have a Whirlpool Gold and, IIRC, a Kenmore at our kitchens. Both have the same filters.

I put a new (Whirlpool) dishwasher in this house when we moved in 6 years ago. We have yet to clean the filter.

A while ago I mentioned cleaning the filter to my wife but neither of us could figure out where it is located and gave up.

We've had an LG for 6 years or so. Quiet. Cleaned the filter once.

However, the door design is stupid. It's held by two springs and two strings over pulleys. The strings wear out about every two years, or the spring end breaks off. The door is heavy and when it breaks you hope your foot isn't in the way. $15 from Amazon gets new strings and springs. Didn't ought to be that way.

That's what led to Sis having to replace her dishwasher. They didn't even know what the filter was or that they had to do anything with it.

There's no real sign that there's a need to clean it, unless you don't scrape your plate at all, but it is very easy to do, so why not?

Why not? I'll weigh in:

Re: economics:

our two eldest sons, early 30s, careers, married, houses, lifelong savers.

A couple of months ago, one of them asked my thought re something macro. I replied he & his brother: for the first time probably ever, this is Dad advising you spend, not save.

Specifically, any durable good you're pretty sure you're going to need in the nex few years -- new dishasher, new furnace, new (well, gently used) car: I vote for now. I have no idea what the prices of these things are going to be in a couple of years, but I'd bet good money against them being cheaper. Or potentially even easily available.

So: my vote is, buy the dishwasher

---------

Re: model.

A couple of years back, our 13-15 year old Bosch gave it up after a conservatively estimated 10,000 cycles. We replaced with another Bosch and are happy. It's a high-efficiency which means slower, but big deal. Especially as it gets things really clean and dry, which is the point.

It came with a bunch of fancy settings which we don't need use want, but my sole complaint about this gadget is that most of them are only available via wifi. I don't see any good reason to give my dishwasher/washing machine/ceiling fan/dog bowls access to my home network.

Of the commands available the old-fashioned way (i.e. on the door panel), two that I do use are missing: rinse & hold, and delay start. The latter is particularly helpful when it's August, 105 and smoky outside, we've had the AC on since 10 am, and the last thing I need is the dw blowing hot humid air into the kitchen. Nope, no 2 am start time for this Luddite. (I have plenty more first-world problems if you're interested).

Anyhow, pretty nitpicky, and I'd buy a Bosch again.

--------------

Re: filter. I go on a rigorous cleaning schedule of, hmmm, guess I haven't cleaned the filter in a couple of months. Or six.

It's plugged up on my exactly once, when I was playing chicken with it to see how much debris it could handle. I think it was a bunch of baked-on lasagna noodles that bested the German engineers.

Anyhow, it's easy to do, takes a literal minute to do, and doesn't require a deep-knee bend. (I don't think you'll find a dw that doesn't have the filter on the bottom because, you know, water drains downhill.)

Nonsense. We have two Bosch dishwashers and the filters are cleaned every 3 to 4 months. I take the filters out, wash them in the sink with a sponge, and replace them inside the dishwasher. Takes 2-3 minutes max.

That's a non-starter for me since my knee hurts

The filters are NOT underneath the chassis near the floor! They are just below the bottom rack, it is just about as easy to pull the filters out as it is to take stuff out of the bottom rack.

I've only cleaned my filter out a couple of times over the year that I've had it, but there was really nothing in it. Meaning I did what they suggested but it wasn't needed, except to have a sparkly clean filter.

I think they tell you to regularly clean so they cover their behinds.

Depends, too, on how you rinse or don't rinse your dishes--but I would never say never check the filter. That could potentially be yucky. So you know, get the feel for it and do what works.
