A police veteran was asked about the situation on the NBC evening news. The officer said, of course, that carrying a property licensed gun is not a crime in the US. The officers would only be justified in shooting, if Pretti had pulled the gun, brandished the gun, or said words to the effect he intended to shoot the officers. Personally, if there were half a dozen officers on me, I understand do NOT pull a gun, because that makes you a legit target.
Finding a gun on his person, one officer shouted "gun", to alert the others, as they are trained to do. When local authorities asked the officers who saw Pretti brandish the gun, there was no answer.
