“I can quit drinking anytime I want. In fact, if I get this job, I’ll quit for good”

Honest version:

“I can quit drinking anytime I want. In fact, I’ve already quit six times this year.”

Prediction: he will quit drinking on will power alone…. for a period that could last for a few months…. Or even longer. A year? Perhaps

But then we’ll start hearing the rumors, and the stories…. Of alcohol smelled on his breath during some early morning meeting…. Or of late night carousing… or of making drunken psses at women on his staff.

Then will come the crisis- the late night summons to deal with a real emergency that cannot wait till morning….. and he will not be there to do his job.
