Sanctuary laws exist to keep delicate census numbers up by helping keep people who shouldn’t be here, here.
The rest is just hand waving.
And here we are again. You lament that liberals on this board don't tell you their positions. But then if we tell you our positions, you simply deny that they are, in fact, our positions.
Sanctuary laws get adopted in communities with large proportions of illegal immigrants because it causes a lot of damage to those communities when illegal immigrants get deported. Wives lose husbands, husbands lose wives, children lose parents, churches lose congregants. Parents pull their kids out of school and stop taking them to health care when they're scared of deportation. Etc. Sanctuary laws are efforts to mitigate those damages.
You might prefer to think that they aren't intended to address real-world harms to actual people in actual communities, but they are. And those communities reach a different conclusion about the right balance between those harms and the benefits of indiscriminate immigration enforcement than you might.
You don't have to agree that they're right, but telling people that they don't really believe that they believe isn't correct.
