Indeed. One POTUS said something along the lines of "If Lincoln was alive today, he would roll over in his grave". I remember, in a debate, in 76. Jerry Ford insisting that the Soviet Union did not dominate Poland. The moderators were laffing. Carter was laffing. Over the following days, Jerry kept trying to control the damage, but only dug his hole deeper.
