The week's question
In March 2025, in the thread "Re: OT, out", Umm asked the members: "Do you think it is because America is made up of magical soil that makes businesses based in America magically profitable?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

michiganindependent.com - Michigans rural hospitals closing reducing service after medicaid cuts

As Congress debated the One Big Beautiful Act last year, health advocates warned that provisions in the bill cutting $1 trillion over 10 years from Medicaid and other federal health programs would imperil healthcare access, especially in rural communities.

Those predictions are now being realized in Michigan: A new fact sheet distributed by the nonprofit organization Protect Our Care shows that since President Donald Trump signed the bill into law in July of last year, several Michigan hospitals and clinics have closed or cut back services and others are at risk of doing so.

The sheet says Michigan hospitals “are expected to lose $28.4 billion over the next decade due to GOP Medicaid cuts. As of August 2026, 23 Michigan health care providers are at-risk, announced cuts, are closing, or have closed.”

Rural health facilities in the state have been particularly hard hit. Last September, Aspirus Health announced that it would end labor and delivery care at its Ironwood Hospital in the Upper Peninsula.

And in June, the Sturgis Hospital in St. Joseph County, a mostly rural section in southern Michigan, announced it would cease operations. “This decision follows many years of ongoing financial challenges facing rural healthcare providers, including declining reimbursement rates, rising operational costs, and a sustained decrease in patient utilization,” it said in a statement.

And why don't rural voters reciprocate?
