The week's question
In March 2025, in the thread "Re: OT, out", Umm asked the members: "Do you think it is because America is made up of magical soil that makes businesses based in America magically profitable?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

I disagree.
Most in the US are opposed to the tariffs. As mentioned in a different thread, Trump tends to stick to bad ideas regardless of the advice given to him.
Even if another MAGA republican wins (which I agree is unlikely), I suspect they will not be like Trump. I suspect they will do the smarter thing and limit the tariffs and trade barriers.

1. The tariff discussion is filtered through the media. Since Trump imposed them they're framed as bad.

But what happens when somebody else imposes tariffs?

abcnews.com - Biden slammed trumps china tariffs now building analysis

Biden once slammed Trump's China tariffs. Now he's building on them: ANALYSIS
Biden’s tariffs on $18B worth of Chinese goods focus on strategic industries.

But now, not only is Biden keeping those Trump-era tariffs in place, he actually is building on them.

It's true that Biden's new tariffs on $18 billion worth of Chinese imports are narrowly focused on a few strategic industries. At a Rose Garden event unveiling the new actions, Biden touted it as a "smart approach" to target goods such as electric vehicles, solar cells, steel, aluminum and certain medical equipment.

But he is maintaining many of the broad-based tariffs from the Trump-era that he was once highly critical of.

The larger plan of decoupling critical US supply chains from China will continue REGARDLESS of who wins in 2028. Why? Several reasons.

2. It's unmistakable that manufacturing is coming back.

Who wants to be the politician that says, "Vote for me and I'll make sure you have all the cheap foreign goods you want but none of it will be made here!" Literally no one from either party is going to go there.
