The Avignon Papacy, also known as the "Babylonian Captivity of the Papacy," was a 73-year period (1309-1377) when the papal seat was located in Avignon, France, rather than Rome, during which the popes were heavily influenced by the French monarchy.

Perhaps not the Marines storming the Vatican, but it was a not so subtle threat of coercion.
