The week's question
In March 2025, in the thread "Re: OT, out", Umm asked the members: "Do you think it is because America is made up of magical soil that makes businesses based in America magically profitable?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

Lithium Americas soars on report Trump administration seeking equity stake

(Reuters) -U.S.-listed shares of Lithium Americas (LAC) surged more than 70% before the bell on Wednesday after a report said the Trump administration is seeking up to a 10% stake in the miner, the latest sign of Washington's push into industries deemed critical to national security.

Reuters reported late on Tuesday, citing two people familiar with the discussions, that the administration was discussing taking the stake in the company as part of talks to renegotiate a $2.26 billion government loan for its Thacker Pass lithium mine.

finance.yahoo.com - Lithium americas soars report trump

Lithium Americas is a Canadian company. A USian subsidiary of that company is to run the Thacker Pass lithium mine, which is in Nevada. The US government has made a large loan to the lithium mine, and General Motors has made a significant investment as well. But the Trump regime is openly, proudly, EV-hostile. So, who will buy the lithium that the US government, and GM, have invested so heavily in?
