Iranian official involved in peace talks critically injured in US-Israeli strike

He was targeted at his home in Tehran in a joint US-Israeli strike early on Thursday, according to Iranian newspapers Shargh, Etemad and Ham Mihan. The strike also killed his wife, reports said.

Commentators have described the attack as an attempt to derail diplomacy because of Mr Kharazi’s role in overseeing engagement with Pakistan for a possible in-person meeting between Iranian officials and JD Vance, the US vice-president.

US intelligence assessments indicate Iran currently unwilling to negotiate end to war

The report additionally indicated that Iran is willing to keep diplomatic channels open, but does not trust the US or think US President Donald Trump is serious about engaging in negotiations.

Two Iranian officials and one Pakistani official told the NYT that the Iranian regime could engage in diplomacy under the right conditions. Still, they needed to see that the US is willing to seriously discuss ending the war rather than negotiating a temporary ceasefire.

Now, would Israel intentionally try to kill any Iranian trying to negotiate peace, to prevent a negotiated settlement, to keep the war going? Recall, Qatar had provided neutral ground for Hamas and Israel to negotiate a resolution to the war in Gaza. The Israeli Air Force flew to Qatar, and bombed the apartment building the Hamas team was living in.
