None of us, even the most fundamentalist of Christians, get our complete view of morality from ancient texts.
True. Secular laws tend to be superior to religious law. At this point, if you lived as prescribed in the bible, you'd be in prison for various acts.
I don't twist myself at all. I just read what it says, and then make fun of it (because what it says -usually- is preposterous or monstrous). Didn't know about the Romans verse. So they covered lesbians in the NT. Gay men were in the OT (Leviticus?).
The one thing I can be accused of is reading as a fundamentalist would. I see what it says, and assume it means what it says. Just like a fundy. I've actually seen fundies try to defend the acceptance of slavery in the bible (it lays it all out in Exodus 21, and somewhere in Deuteronomy). And, if you read the printed word, they are correct. But in our 21st century society, we regard it as morally reprehensible.
Lots of denominations either ignore it entirely, or try to say "that's not what that means". Which, of course, is wrong. It's very clear. The meaning is not obscured at all. They -to their credit- simply have gone beyond that morality, and reject those verses.
