Lots of denominations either ignore it entirely, or try to say "that's not what that means". Which, of course, is wrong. It's very clear. The meaning is not obscured at all. They -to their credit- simply have gone beyond that morality, and reject those verses.
Absolutely. Slavery, just war, homosexuality, women's rights: liberal denominations have moved on, but they can't let go of the text, so they twist themselves in knots, and come up with a "sophisticated theology". Why bother? Read the text if you like it. Study it. Try to get at the original meaning. Just like you might do the Iliad or the Odyssey or Shakespeare. But don't use it as a guide to 21st century life. It's not that.
