The week's question
In March 2025, in the thread "Re: OT, out", Umm asked the members: "Do you think it is because America is made up of magical soil that makes businesses based in America magically profitable?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

Buy 25 Trump dollars for $61. And businesses do not have to accept them.

But the gullible cultists have bought out the supply that were minted and now they are on sale at inflated prices on eBay. How stupid do you have to be?
------------
Yes, the new Trump $1 coins are official legal tender issued by the [U.S. Mint](usmint.gov - Semiquincentennial president donald j trump coin rolls bags MASTER SEMIQDJT). They carry a face value of $1 and can legally be used to pay debts, taxes, and other public charges.

However, there are a few important caveats you should know before trying to spend them:

## Buying Them Costs More Than They Are Worth
The U.S. Mint is selling these coins primarily as collectibles, meaning they are sold at a premium.
*
* 25-coin rolls cost $61 (about $2.44 per coin).
* 100-coin bags cost $154.50. [1, 5]
*

Because you have to pay a markup to buy them, spending them at a local store means you would immediately lose money on their collector value.

## Stores Do Not Have to Accept Them

Even though they are legal tender, federal law does not require private businesses to accept them as payment. Business owners are generally free to set their own payment policies, meaning a store can refuse to take the dollar coins just as they might refuse large $100 bills.

## They Are Not Real Gold

Despite their shiny, gold-colored finish, the coins contain no actual gold. According to the U.S. Mint, the coins “do not contain any precious metal; the golden coloring is derived from manganese brass.” They are physically composed of copper, zinc, nickel, and manganese.

## Why Their Legality Is Controversial
The release of the coin has sparked intense debate because federal law normally prohibits putting a living person—especially a president—on American currency.

| Traditional Restrictions | The 2026 Loophole |

| 31 U.S. Code § 5112 explicitly states that no coin may bear the image of a living president, requiring a president to be deceased for at least two years before appearing on a coin. | The Treasury Department justified the release by citing the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020 for America's 250th anniversary. While that law blocks living portraits on the reverse (tails side) of coins, it does not explicitly ban them on the obverse (heads side). |

Democratic lawmakers have heavily disputed this legal interpretation, but for now, the coins remain active, official legal tender.
