Israel was founded on an original sin, and the populations of those territories continue to be condemned by that sin. Zionism pursues the perfection of that sin in an ever shifting quest for the perfect alignment of ethnic identity and territoriality as part of its ongoing state project. As a Jewish state, non-Jewish indigenous inhabitants can never be truly assimilated as citizens of that state, hence the Zionist struggle to expel and eliminate the other.
That is a false characterization of Zionism. At its founding, and at the founding of the state of Israel, and for the first 50 years of Israel’s existence, Zionism sought to establish a state which Jewish people could call their home, while it guaranteed equal rights to all its citizens. Israel’s Declaration of Independence was practically plagiarized from America’s because it espoused the same ideas, never quite accomplished in either case. The fact that Israel, and Zionism, have been hijacked by religious extremists, should not condemn the original Zionist idea.
The end to this madness [is] to realize that the only way out is a state that recognizes the right of all people to exist and participate equally in its governance.
