This is part of the cycle of our politics. I think the last rough time was the 50-60S. I was born in 51, so I was just becoming aware. MLK, two Kennedy's, various killings - I've accepted we're a violent racist bunch and periodically we're going to murder each other. That's the way we are.
So when it comes to guns, I advocated gun safes as a stealth way to let people see that some control can be helpful - less kids killed, but that's not catching any traction. Some day we may do what Japan did, and that's repudiate all the old violent ways, and let the old folks die off with their murdering ways. Could happen, but not much chance - so we're stuck here, in a far right wing swing of the cycle, hoping it doesn't get worse.
In the meantime the racists will be assuring themselves by seeing that the black and latino murder rates are higher, confirming their superiority to them.
It isn't the second amendment, it's us. We're easily manipulated into giving tax cuts to the rich, and voting against our interests.
