https://www.nytimes.com/2025/01/24/us/politics/tru...President Trump fired 17 inspectors general, the internal watchdogs who monitor federal agencies, on Friday night, capping a week of dramatic shake-ups of the federal bureaucracy focused on loyalty to the president, three people with knowledge of the matter said.
The sweeping move did not affect Michael E. Horowitz, the inspector general for the Justice Department, according to one of the people with knowledge of the matter. The path has been cleared for unlimited grifting. Or worse.

Current law requires a president to give Congress a 30 day notice before firing an IG. Obviously, that was not met in this case.
Here's a summary of the law and it's history from the Congressional Research Service - a 3 page PDF
https://crsreports.congress.gov/product/pdf/IF/IF1...A couple of interesting observations.
-The firings were not announced until after Hegseth was confirmed. Would announcing the firings before the confirmation was final have influenced one more Senator to vote against confirmation?
-Does this particular Congress care? Obviously, slightly less than half of each house will care deeply. But it will likely take at least some GOP members to also care to make any difference.
-What are the consequences of failing to meet the 30 day requirement? It's probably buried in the actual text of the law, but its too late at night for me to be reading law. Chapter and verse are cited in the CRS report.

Reminiscent of the Night of Long Knives. Obviously no killings involved, but definitely a removal of people who might stand in the way of a dictatorial leader.
Inspectors General are there to investigate reports of waste, fraud, and abuse in government.
I guess the lie of cutting government waste has been exposed now, alongside the law and order lie.

Is everyone else as shocked as I am that a 34 count felon and an adjudicated rapist would break the law?

And Trump never talks about 'draining the swamp' anymore. He's opening the flood gates of corruption.
I really doubt we can recover from Trump 2.0.

I am coming to realize how much of our Republic's success depended on respect for norms. That is GONE now. And it seems our new deranged unitary POTUS is willing to break all the norms and destroy it all in his petty desire for revenge on perceived enemies.
That man is SICK!

Well, I broke down and read USC 5 Sec 403 where this law resides.
No consequences.
Perhaps someone more skilled in the law knows of some other places to find some consequences for failing to follow this notice requirement.

Albaby keeps insisting that the Felon won't be able to get lower folks to do his bidding because they aren't protected by immunity. But if the Felon just fires all of them, then what's to stop him from doing what he wants? In principle, he could fire the entire bureaucracy in one mass stroke, and then put sycophants in charge of various departments.
That's how a lot of dictators do it. Fire (or worse) anyone who might oppose them, and then install obedient servants. What's to stop the Felon doing that? (Serious question...not being hyperbolic...in theory there are some posts he can't fire, but only in theory.**)
**Just as a wild example...SCOTUS. The Felon could "fire" them by reducing the size of the Court. The size isn't set in the Constitution (unfortunate oversight by the Founders). So, maybe fire everyone except Barrett, Kavanaugh, and Thomas. A Court of three, and still an odd number (so no "ties").

I know the prequels sucked, but there were a few impactful moments...like when Amadala said "so this is how democracy dies, with thunderous applause". That line always stuck with me.

Some responses from Senators today
Thune: I haven’t [been given a heads up], so I better reserve comment. I’m sure I will.
Murkowski: The summary dismissal of everybody, I think, has raised concerns.
Grassley: There may be good reason the IGs were fired. We need to know that if so.
Collins: I don’t understand why one would fire individuals whose mission is to root out waste, fraud and abuse. So this leaves a gap in what I know is a priority for President Trump.
What a bunch of wimps. Nothing but kowtowing to King Trump. You are United States Senators. You are co-equal defenders of Democracy.
Trump just spit in your face. He has defied the laws you wrote and enacted. He dismissed your role in governing this country. You should be outraged at this insult to your authority, not “concerned.”
Yes, the Senate has a long tradition of acting and speaking in measured tones. But there are times to break with that tradition. This would be one of those times.

Hey Susan. Waste, fraud and abuse is absolutely a priority for Trump. He wants to do as much of it for his own benefit - and the benefit of his oligarch buddies - as he can.
