Or, Schumer explained to his insurance company paymasters that the fight was unwinnable. Then he fingered enough Senators who had nothing to lose, to vote with the GOP, to end the collateral damage, while he still puffs himself up as a "defender of the people".

I don't think Schumer has that much power. That's why he needs to either retire with what's left of his dignity, or be primaried.
