Checking the claim that the market goes up more than it goes down in any given time period.

Using the daily close of the S&P 500 from 1/3/1950 to 9/25/2025. 75 years.

Price only,without dividends:
# days in period: 1 2 5 20 60 125 250 1250
Period: Daily 2 day week month quarter semiann annual 5 yr
# with gain: 10119 5199 2184 602 218 105 55 11
Total #: 19053 9526 3810 951 316 151 75 14
Pct with Gain: 53% 55% 57% 63% 69% 70% 73% 79%

Incl dividends:
Pct with Gain: 54% 56% 59% 65% 72% 75% 77% 86%

Conclusion:
For any period of a month or longer, the market goes up about 2/3 of the time.
