Your "friend" doesn't really despite Abbot, Patrick, and Cruz.

His livelihood depends on fossil fuels.

So, either he's just telling you what you want to hear because he doesn't care, except he doesn't want to hear your annoying political ranting, and he values your friendship for other reasons.

Or, you made the entire fucking stupid story up.

I think the second option is by far the most likely.
