Teddy Roosevelt famously “convinced” Nicaragua to allow the Panama Canal to be built What we are seeing in Venezuela, Panama, Grenada, is the "Roosevelt Corollary". What I had forgotten over the years, was that the Roosevelt Corollary was established due to a "crisis" in Venezuela.
In the history of United States foreign policy, the Roosevelt Corollary was an addition to the Monroe Doctrine articulated by President Theodore Roosevelt in his 1904 State of the Union Address, largely as a consequence of the Venezuelan crisis of 1902–1903. The corollary states that the United States could intervene in the internal affairs of Latin American countries if they committed flagrant wrongdoings that "loosened the ties of civilized society"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roosevelt_Corollaryiirc, what is now Panama, was part of Columbia. Columbia would not bow down to Teddy, so *presto* a new country appeared, which would give Teddy what he wanted.
