The week's question
In March 2025, in the thread "Re: OT, out", Umm asked the members: "Do you think it is because America is made up of magical soil that makes businesses based in America magically profitable?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

It sounds like you are saying the Middle East is going to be a shit show for a while. I don’t disagree with that. If the UN takes Israel’s nukes away from them, at least it won’t become a nuclear shit show.

It's not going to become a nuclear shit show in any plausible scenario. Even the implausible ones. But it's a moot point, because the UN has neither the authority nor the capacity to take away Israel's nuclear weapons.

The pain of change is still bigger than the pain of the status quo. The status quo needs to get worse before change will happen in the mid east.

In the US vernacular of today, give them what they’re asking for, good and hard.

The problem is that there isn't a singular "them." There's almost certainly a majority of Palestinians would are unhappy with the status quo and would prefer the pain of change to current conditions. But they don't get to overrule the minority that feels the opposite, and probably never will. The same is true of Israel right now, though there are more structural avenues for the majority to overrule the minority in the future.

If you give it to them good and hard, it's just going to bring massive amounts of pain and suffering, to no real long-term benefit for anyone.
