… every authoritarian state seeks to create states of hypervigilance and fear among the public, so that people will self-censor, and comply with whatever the leader asks them to do.

The playbook is the same, from 10 year old playground bullies to autocrats leading nations. If they can make you afraid, they can control you.

The response must be the same as well. Stand up to the bully. There may be short term pain, but long term freedom from fear.
