orderly deliberate manner without total chaos and terrorist bombs blowing up American troops and people trying to climb on the outside of the departing airplanes and falling off?

That sounds like the folks trying to get out of 'Nam in 75. I remember Jerry trying to get a lot of orphans out. Sent a C-5 to pick them up in Saigon. Shortly after takeoff, iirc, it was the rear cargo door that failed. The plane crashed. Most of the orphans were killed. I think Jerry was a fundamentally decent person, but his administration was snake bit.

It isn't as prominent in the Ford Museum since the remodel, but the stairway to the helo pad on the roof of the Saigon embassy is in the Museum now.
