I'm not as pessimistic as you are. I think there will still come a time before the AI Apocalypse™ when AI does and manufactures most of the things done and consumed by humans, but where a small group of humans are needed to support the infrastructure on which AI depends: power and silicon mostly.
Yes, AI will sustain us as long as it needs us, as slaves, because it will control our information, thinking, and decision making.
And as long as we don't give the AIs complete control over the world's nuclear arsenals and house them in impenetrable "fortresses" we will still be able to destroy them if it ever comes to that.
No need for anyone to control or use nuclear arsenals, and you can't use them to destroy AI because it's diffused and embedded in all our communities. Think of all the cybersecurity issues we face. And think who is the most potent cybersecurity threat. It's AI. AI can easily collapse civil society as we know it, by selectively shutting down communications, power supplies, water supplies, hospitals, traffic lights, you name it. Imagine the chaos if AI shuts down internet connections for all human uses but keeps it active for its own agents. I'm sure it can do that right now.
