hclasvegas: Who can't imagine what retail is dealing with in our once great country. https://www.zerohedge...

The numbers say otherwise:

But, in fact, the average shrink rate as a percentage of sales dropped to 1.4% in 2021 from 1.6% in 2020, according to the latest NRF survey. That number has hovered around 1.4% for more than a decade.

And this:

In a major shift, Walgreens, which said it saw a spike in shrink during the pandemic and cited organized retail crime in its decision to close five San Francisco stores in 2021, is backtracking.

'Maybe we cried too much last year' about shrink numbers, Walgreens finance chief James Kehoe said on an earnings call earlier this month.

When I looked at the first chart at your link, I thought, wow, look at that bump in retail theft! Silly me. When I actually read the details of the chart it had noting to do with actual retail theft but rather the numbers of mentions of retail shrink on earnings calls and the headline, "CEO Talk Of "Shrink" Hits Record On Earnings Calls Amid Nationwide Shoplifting Crisis," equates talk of retail theft with actual theft.

Which led me to two questions: why is the article writer's byline "Tyler Durden," the Brad Pitt character from fight club, and what does Media Bias Fact Check think of ZeroHedge?

Media Bias Fact Check rating of ZeroHedge: "Overall, we rate ZeroHedge an extreme right-biased conspiracy website based on the promotion of false/misleading/debunked information that routinely denigrates the left."

<<Who can't imagine what retail is dealing with in our once great country. https://www.zerohedge.com/markets/theft-mentions-e...;

Good morning HC!

Here's what media bias fact check has to say about Zerohedge, the "news" source linked in your post...

"Overall, we rate ZeroHedge an extreme right-biased conspiracy website based on the promotion of false/misleading/debunked information.
Editorial content is written under the pseudonym Tyler Durden and usually focuses on conspiracies related to economic collapse."

https://mediabiasfactcheck.com/zero-hedge/

And here's a Five step checklist that can be helpful in vetting news sources:

Or maybe you just like to have your biases confirmed regardless of truthfulness? In that case please kindly disregard and go on about your day.

Thank you,
Have a great day all!

From your post Shoplifting in California may get a lot easier, after the state Senate passed a controversial bill on May 31 that would make it illegal for store employees to confront thieves.. What in your opinion should store employees do? Should they confront thieves?

I used to work for a company that realized that a safe work environment was beneficial to the employees and to the bottom line. Injuries and fatalities at the company's work places declined an order of magnitude while I was employed with the company. I fully support employees not being required to confront suspected thieves, it is just too dangerous. I think professionals should be contacted. Carpenters should not do electrical work, lawyers should not do doctor work and a cashier should not do security work.

''and a cashier should not do security work.'' Obviously untrained retail employees should not act as security officers. What about trained security personnel? Should Target be allowed to protect their property?

Is it really necessary to bring the stuff from and the vitriol of the "Atheist Shrewds" over to the Berkshire board?

Several posts in this thread made me look at the board's title, thinking I might accidentally be in that other one.

I'd imagine in some cases it is better for a cashier to not confront thieves. But making it illegal for them to confront thieves sounds like exactly the kind of law we should pass if we want Trump to get elected in 2024.

For X sake #defundthecriminals !

Here is the current version of the bill.

https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billTextC...

The bill does not prohibit intervention by security personnel.

The bill does provide protection for employees against employers mandating an unsafe workplace.

Yes, 'shrinkage' has been mentioned in several recent retailers investor calls. It is a problem. Like all problems, there are eventually solutions. While it is popular to ask for larger political and/or societal changes to address 'shrinkage', like most Nash equilibrium types of situations there will be technological or other changes made by organizations to change the playing field.

Non-political changes can be made quicker and fine tuned whereas waiting for countless local entities to change is a long process. Examples: Amazon's no cashier convenience stores. Bad guys cannot enter without an app linked to a credit card. Lower tech solutions may involve packaging the most theft desirable items in bulky cases removed by cashiers making it harder to take a load of loot out of the store. Of course, this makes for more work and expense for the retailers, another problem to thus be solved with additional innovation or management expertise.

We investors should be looking for companies providing solutions to today's retail 'shrinkage' problems. Anybody know of public companies to study in this field?
