One of the important things that goes into the method of execution isn't the effect it has on the condemned prisoner. It's the effect it has on the executioners and the public.
Not sure I buy that. No one is forced to be an executioner. You sign-up for the job. Only someone who is "OK" with that would do it. As for the public, back in the day it used to be a community event to go watch the hangings. Again, if they didn't like it they would have stayed home.
Just to reiterate, I don't support the death penalty for the reason I gave upthread. Just discussing this academically.
To the other poster, it does make sense that a guillotine could fail under some circumstances. You'd need to keep it clean and sharp, which shouldn't be an issue in a nation that doesn't execute that many people. If you're doing 50 per day, that's another story. Then shooting is probably the best option.
