there is a window of naive optimism (influenced by Francis), that selecting a counter to rightwing hate would be strategically served by having an a fearless american pope.
but on its own, empathetic Christians have no chance vs the cult of MAGA.

in summary, if we are counting on religion to save us, then [unresolved 'whys' of the cosmos] help us all.
