I don’t think he’s all that politically canny. He simply tells everyone what they want to hear to get their support, then actually does whatever he thinks is best for himself financially.
Fair enough - but virtually no one wants to hear that we've unilaterally launched a nuclear strike and used nukes as a weapon of war for the first time in nearly a century. Trump's got many many flaws, but he has to know that doing that doesn't help him. It doesn't help him (or rather his proxies) win elections, and it doesn't help him create a situation where he can ignore elections. It would only make him weaker among his base.
